Brief History:

Nuwaidrat Mosque is the oldest mosque in Bahrain, built in the 17th century CE. Legend has it that the Mosque was built by refugees from Bahrain’s neighbouring countries that sought refuge in Bahrain. The exact date of the building of the Mosque is unknown but it is believed to have been constructed during the reign of Shaikh Meshaal bin Salman Al-Khalifa (1709-1720 CE). The mosque is known for its unique architecture, whose design is unique in Bahrain. The mosque features two large minarets which have two balconies each, a main prayer hall surrounded by porticoes with colonnades, a facade with arches, a mihrab (prayer niche), and a dome with seven doors. Nuwaidrat Mosque is also known for its rare and unique artifacts, such as Persian carpets and antique rugs. Inside the mosque visitors can also view a beautiful chandelier with a intricate brass sphere and two superbly crafted marble pillars adorned with colorful ceramic tiles. The mosque is also located on a strategically important location, as it overlooks the old King Fahd Causeway bridge linking Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
