Brief History:
The Al-Tamimi Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in Bahrain. It was built in 1656 by Sheikh Mohammad Bin Salem Al-Tamimi, a ruler of the country during the 18th century. The mosque is located in the old town of Muharraq, close to the Riffa Grand Mosque. The mosque is made of plastered brick and covered in white plaster. It has two minarets and a domed prayer hall. The gate of the mosque is adorned with a large wooden door with inscriptions. The mosque has been renovated multiple times, most recently in 2011. It is said that young men of Muharraq gathered and prayed here during the uprising against the British colonial government in the early 20th century. It is one of the most famous mosque in Bahrain which you must visit.
Architecture:
The Al-Tamimi Mosque in Bahrain is an iconic building which dates back to the 19th century. It was originally built in 1871 by Haji Shiekh Yusuf Al-Tamimi on the site of an earlier structure which was destroyed. It is one of the oldest surviving mosques in the country and is a popular tourist destination. The mosque is built in an overall traditional Islamic style, with a large central dome and four minarets rising from the roof. The inner sanctuary is composed of three large vaulted chambers, each with its own elaborate interior decorated with intricate tilework and stucco. The main entrance is adorned with a grand archway, giving access to the courtyard. On either side of the entrance are two side rooms, the upper one serving as a place for delivering sermons, and the lower one for private prayer. The mosque also has two open-air courtyards open to worshippers and visitors. The walls of the mosque feature stucco inscriptions from the Quran and other Islamic texts, as well as geometric designs and Kufic script. The inner sanctuary is illuminated by small chandeliers and mosaic windows. In the middle of the east wall facing Mecca is the mihrab, an ornate niche used to signify the direction of prayer. The exterior of the mosque displays an interesting combination of traditional Islamic ornamentation with contemporary architectural details. The roof is punctuated with four tall minarets and two low domes, which gives the building a commanding presence in the surrounding landscape. The mosque is painted in a bright white color, which stands out against the striking blue of Bahrain’s sky. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.

Taxis are also available for hire in Manama, although fares can vary quite a bit depending on the route and time of day. Parking: There is limited parking available at the Al-Tamimi Mosque.
