The Baku State Circus was established in 1927 by a former circus clown, Varvara Stepuro and her husband, Ivan Yanchinskii. Initially the circus was located in Baku’s old city. However, due to damage from bombing during World War II, the circus was relocated to a new building in Sabunchu in 1965. The first director of the circus was Varvara Stepuro, and the first performance was in 1929.
