History:
Nardaran Fortress is situated in the municipality of Nardaran in the Absheron Peninsula in Azerbaijan. It is a small but very well-preserved medieval fortress and has attracted visitors and scholars for many centuries. The fortress was built in the 16th century by the ruler of Shirvan, Ahmed-Khan Safavi, and was used as a residence for his harem and other women of his court. It was guarded by a single row of wall elements and an arched gate, and could house around twenty people during its peak. The heavy brick walls of the fortress contained numerous embrasures and gun portals. The fortress was damaged in 1724 when the invading Persians burned the entire enclosure. Later, the main gate was restored to its original form and the French Baroness d'Ormet saw it during her visit to Baku in the 1830s. During the Soviet period, the Nardaran Fortress was taken over by the Defence Ministry and converted into a military base. After Azerbaijan declared independence in 1991, it was opened to the public as a museum. The fortress' many ancient artifacts and items make it a popular tourist destination today.
