History:
Highland Park is located within the Khazar District of Baku, Azerbaijan. It is a hillside park that was established in the early 19th century, and was originally named after the Tsarist Russian General Ivan Paskevich, who was the conqueror of Baku in 1806. The park is situated on a hill near the Caspian Sea, and includes a winding, tree-lined paved footpath along with several seating areas, a picturesque lake, and several additional attractions. The park’s first major renovation took place in the beginning of the 20th century, when the Baku oil industry began to boom. During this period, the park was surrounded by a large green wall and public gardens were planted. Many of these gardens are still preserved today. Several flower-covered bridges, bridges with seats, benches, and other additional features were added, making it a popular recreational spot for locals and tourists alike. The old entrance gate – which is still in use – was also constructed at this time. During the Soviet era, Highland Park was once used as a botanical garden, but its natural environment recovered after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. Since then, the park has been restored and significantly improved, and is now a favorite among locals and visitors. The visitor can enjoy breathtaking views of the city, take part in various activities such as picnicking and sunbathing, and take advantage of the park’s many cultural activities, such as art exhibitions, concerts, and performances. A statue of Lenin was added in the central square of the park in 2000. Highland Park is also home to a variety of plant and animal species, including foxes, rabbits, turtles, and even a flock of macaws. There is also a topiary garden, a beekeeping garden, and a scientific garden. Visitors of all ages can also take part in various educational activities, including environmental education, guided walks, and interactive expositions.
