Azadlig Square (also known as Freedom Square) is a major public square in Baku, Azerbaijan. The centerpiece of the square is a large monument honoring the late President Heydar Aliyev and the Azerbaijani Constitution. The square also contains several other monuments, such as a bust of the well-known national poet, Bakhtiyar Vahabzadeh, and a fountain. History:

Azadlig Square (Azerbaijani: Azadlıq Meydanı) is a large public gathering place located in central Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan. Located near the main train station, the square is a focal point of cultural, social, and political life in the city. Azadlig Square was first laid down in the 19th century, during the reign of the the Russian Empire in the Caucasus region. The original name of the square was Ploschad Krusheniya Square, after a major battle that had taken place nearby during the Russo-Persian War of 1826–1828. During the Soviet period, the square was renamed twice; first to Vladimirov Square in the 1920s, and then to Azadlig Square in the 1950s. The name Azadlig Square translates as Freedom Square, and the current design of the square pays homage to the country’s struggle for independence from the Soviet Union. In front of the square stands a memorial honoring those who died in the January 1990 Black January Tragedy, when Soviet troops violently suppressed a peaceful demonstration in Baku. The memorial, which is made of black marble, consists of a number of granite slabs, each inscribed with the names of the victims of the tragedy, as well as a sculpture of a woman with a shawl covering her face. The square is also home to a number of statues and sculptures, including one honoring Vafadar Aliyev, the leader of the Azerbaijani people during the 1993 war for independence from the Soviet Union, and one commemorating the post-war period of peace that followed. Today, Azadlig Square is a popular destination for both tourists and locals alike.
