The Azerbaijan State Academic Drama Theatre (ASADT) located in Baku, Azerbaijan is the oldest established professional theatre in the country. It was founded in 1922 and it is currently one of the largest theatres in the country with yearly audiences exceeding 2 million. ASADT is renowned for its portrayals of national stories and productions featuring Azerbaijani culture and history. Furthermore, the theatre distinguishes itself by being the first to introduce Stanislavski’s methods of acting and production to Azerbaijan. Notable performances include ‘Destiny of a Man’ by Maxim Gorky which was the first full length theatre piece to be performed at the theatre in 1923, and Abulfaz Elchibey’s play ‘The Flight from Shusha’. In 1950 ASADT also staged a classic rendition of Othello by William Shakespeare. The theatre is credited by many as playing a large role in the cultural renaissance of the country during the 20th century, and for its continued development until the present day. One of the theatre's more modern accomplishments include the acclaimed ‘Sword of Allies’ by Zulfugar Hajibeyli, and it's adaptation of German spoken drama, ‘The Vanishing’.
