Built in 1220, Shamkir Mosque is located in the city of Shamkir in northwestern Azerbaijan. The mosque was constructed during the period of Seljuk rule, when north-western Azerbaijan was under Iranian cultural influence. Although it was originally designed to be a single-domed structure, the mosque was extended several times since its construction. Its current design includes two domes of different sizes, one an almost perfect sphere and the other a half-sphere. The mosque is believed to have been constructed with faced brick and has been renovated to include intricate stonework on its façade. The main entrance of the mosque is facing east, and it has four half-moon shaped windows. The interior of the mosque is decorated with stucco and blue tiles, and the walls are adorned with several Qur'anic inscriptions in Kufic script. The Shamkir mosque is a four-domed mosque located in Shamkir city, Azerbaijan. The mosque is an example of Azerbaijani architecture and the Late Islamic architecture style which is very prevalent in the Southern Caucasus region. This structure was built in 1805 on the remains of an earlier mosque which was constructed in 1761. The mosque has four domes, each made of brick and covered with blue and white tiles. The walls are faced with stone and plastered and inwardly decorated with plaster, layering and ornamenting. The windows are filled with geometric patterns of various sizes. The decoration of the mosque is composed of rich floral and epigraphic ornaments. Inside the mosque, the four-domed ceiling and the large central dome are decorated with intricate plasterwork. Under the domes, the walls are covered in marble stones. On the other side of the mosque, facing the entrance and the southern wall, is a large mihrab platform with magnificent ornamentation on its entablature.
