Nizami Street, located in Baku, Azerbaijan, is a vital artery road of the city and is named after the great Azerbaijani poet, Nizami Ganjavi. The area of what is now Nizami Street has many historical roots, dating back to the 11th century when the town was known as “Chinarlik”. The street was the main thoroughfare of the city dating back to the 18th century when it was referred to as the "Caravan Road". The current name comes from the fact that the great Azeri poet Nizami lived in the area from 1220 to 1226. As the city continued to grow, so did Nizami Street. The street was extended to its current length in 1895 and gained great popularity in the early 20th century. This led to shops, restaurants, banks, cafes, movie theaters and many more buildings opening on the street, creating the atmosphere it has today. The history of Nizami Street is not just one of great economic development; it has also had its share of political significance in Azerbaijan. In 1977, Nizami Street was the site of a huge demonstration in support of the Popular Front of Azerbaijan which took the form of a march from Nizami Street up to the Historical Museum.
