History:

The Fountain Square, located in the heart of Baku, Azerbaijan, has a long and interesting history. The origins of the square date back to the 19th century when it was first developed and named “Alexander’s Park” by Azerbaijani merchants who were trading in the city. Alexander I of Russian Empire had granted to the merchants the permission to make this park as a sign of cultural and economic success of Azerbaijani traders. The park was quickly recognized as the main recreational and social hub of the city. The city authorities decided to enlarge the square and build a fountain which was intended to symbolize the appreciation of nature. The fountain was named “Neft-Qomara” (meaning oil and water) by Alexander I after pointing to the fountain and saying “May oil and water flow forever together”; since then the square was also referred as “Neft-Gomara” which in translation means “oil and water plaza”. The construction of the new square was completed in 1896. The most striking part of the square was a monumental fountain constructed in 1903. It was designed by architect Nikolai Romanovich in the form of an eight-pointed star and wrote on it “Neftqomara”. The fountain was surrounded by a tall decorative gate and a bronze statue at the center of it. In addition to the fountain, the fountain square also contains several old buildings such as the Muslim Magomayev Museum, the Azerbaijan State Academic Drama Theater, the former City Bank building and many other cultural and governmental facilities which give the square a unique atmosphere.
