History:

Baku Railway Station is located in Baku, Azerbaijan and is one of the main railway stations of the city. It has played an important role in the history as one of the major transport hubs connecting Baku to the rest of the country since its opening in 1863. The first railway station in what is now known as the modern day Baku was opened in 1863 and connected the city to the rest of Russia, specifically Tbilisi. The station was originally named Nikolayevskaya, in honor of Tsar Nicholas I. At the time, the railway was a major part of the Transcaucasian Railway which connected Baku to Makhachkala, Grozny and St. Petersburg. Between the years 1881-1882, the Moscow-Baku railway was built, and the station was upgraded to accommodate both the regular and express lines. In 1916, the newly built Trans-Caspian Railway was inaugurated, and Baku Railway Station was part of the network. The station underwent its first major renovation in 1929 with the addition of a large two-story building for ticketing, luggage storage and staff offices. In today’s times, a number of services are no longer being offered in the railway station. This includes the Trans-Caspian Railway which was last used in 2001, and services to Moscow, Kiev, Kostroma, and Saratov due to the rail lines’ deterioration. In 2008, the station underwent a massive renovation which included the addition of a new waiting area, new platforms, and new doors added to the ticket office. The current station also operates regular passenger services to destinations throughout the country.
