History:
Crystal Hall is an indoor arena located in Baku, Azerbaijan and home to the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 and 2012. It was opened on 8 October 2011 and was designed by the Architects, Ofis Architects. It is one of three arenas with a capacity of around 23,000 spectators built for the First European Games held in 2015. Crystal Hall is a large oval-shaped, purpose-built venue, and is used for cultural events such as concerts and sports events. It was constructed in 11 months and was originally intended to host the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest, where it was the venue for both the semi-final and final rounds. Crystal Hall is located near the Baku Sea Port and is surrounded by an artificial lake, adding to its grand appeal. The venue has also hosted large-scale musical events such as Lady Gaga’s concert in 2012, Justin Bieber’s in 2013, and the annual Baku Jazz Festival. In 2015 it became an event venue for the first ever European Games. The building also served as the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2016 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup. In 2016 the venue played host to the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest.
