The Azerbaijan Carpet Museum is an archaeological, ethnographic and cultural museum located in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. The museum houses a collection of Azerbaijani carpets and miniature carpets from various periods of Azerbaijani history. The museum first opened in 1967, on the initiative of scientists and researchers from the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan. The museum’s main mission is to promote the research of Azerbaijani carpets and miniature carpets, provide information on its history and culture, and foster an appreciation of Azerbaijani heritage. The museum occupies two floors of a building in Baku’s old city, Ingilab. It mainly exhibits Azerbaijani carpets from the Karabakh, Shahsevan, Quba-Kuba, Lankaran, Guba, Qazvin, Nakhchivan, Garabagh and Naxcivan regions of Azerbaijan, as well as Turkish, northern Persian, and Balkan carpets. Examples of Azerbaijani kilim (rug) are also present. The museum’s collection includes carpets from the medieval period, such as the Azerbaijan Sultanate and Ak-Koyunlu, to carpets from the twentieth century. Several of the carpets were produced by Karabakh rug-makers in Shusha and surrounding villages. The museum also has displayed several carpets from the Mingachevir carpet factory, which is the oldest carpet-weaving factory in Azerbaijan.
