History:

The history of the Baku Zoo starts from the very beginning of the 20th century. It was established in 1915 by the initiative of the Baku City Committee. At the beginning, the zoo held some birds and animals, which had been a donation from private individuals, members of nobles, and zoological gardens. By the mid 1920s, the zoo collection had grown to include tigers, lions, antelopes, panthers, bears, wolves, and others. During World War II, the zoo was severely damaged. After the war, reconstruction began and the zoo was fully restored in 1950, when its collection was replenished with numerous new animals, including rare species from the Caucasus, Central Asia, and other countries. In 1977, the zoo was moved to a new site. The area of the zoo was greatly increased, and its collection was replenished with more animals. It gained notoriety in 2003 as the first zoo to successfully introduce rapid construction of enclosures for living animals in Azerbaijan. In 2011, the Baku Zoo became one of the first zoos in the world to gain approval for its conservation and development program from the Global Environment Facility. This program focused on establishing scientific foundations for species conservation and improving the habitability of the zoo's habitats and enclosures. The zoo currently covers an area of 47.45 acres and houses 1,657 animals belonging to 71 species.
