Brief History:

Hazratbal Dargah is a famous Sufi shrine dedicated to the memory of Syed Makhdoom Ismail Sahib, a renowned scholar from Amroha in India. The octagonal shaped mausoleum of Ismail Sheik is the centre of this revered shrine. It is believed that the shrine was initially built in 1074 AD by his father Sheikh Taj-ud-Din. It was then renovated by his son Nawab Sayyed Mian Ismail in 1602. The grave of Ismail Sahib is protected by an intricately carved marble and metal screen of five panels. Hazratbal Dargah is a place of great religious importance for the Muslims of India and an important pilgrimage site for the Sufis of India. Every year, numerous devotees from all over India come to this shrine to pay homage to Ismail Sahib. The shrine also hosts an annual Urs festival which is observed with much fanfare and celebration. This structure is surrounded by a huge marble courtyard and four large minarets that are intricately carved in Jaipuri style. There is a large domed gateway at the entrance of the complex made up of stone slabs that are delicately carved. The walls of the inner area feature carvings of floral and geometric designs. The mausoleum of the Saint has a square-shaped structure with a tiled roof and surrounded by a glass railing. Inside this structure, a relic of Islam's Holy Prophet, Hazrat Mohammad, is preserved and displayed on special occasions. A huge marble hall is present in the center of the Dargah where traditional qawwalis are performed, a devotion similar to communal practices across south Asia that involves chanting religious lyrics in a group.
