Overview:
emple, Varpet is located in the village of Varpet, Madurai district, Tamil Nadu. It is dedicated to Lord Siva and is popularly known as Varpet Muthani Thirukoil. The temple is one of the ancient temples in South India and is believed to have been constructed by the Cheras of Kongu Nadu in the 7th century AD. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The Temple is noteworthy for its architecture which is a blend of Dravidian and Pallava styles of architecture. The temple has a total of five structures. The main structure of the temple houses an idol of Lord Siva along with that of his consort Parvathy. The temple also has an imposing gopuram (tower) in the front, a mandapa (hall) with pillars, a Nandi mandapam (bull mandapam), and a mukhamandapam (entrance). According to the legend, the temple was originally built by the Cheras of Kongu Nadu in the 7th century AD. Since then, the temple has been renovated and restored several times by various rulers like Pandya kings, Chola kings, Vijayanagar kings and Nayak kings.
