Brief History:
is a Sufi shrine located in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu.This is the shrine of one of the most famous Sufi saints of India, Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, who is popularly known as Khwaja Gharib Nawaz. The shrine is believed to have been established in the 12th century by a Muslim saint, Hazrat Bahrool Chishti, a descendant of Hazrat Khwaja. According to the legends, Hazrat Khwaja was born in Chisht in present-day Afghanistan in 1141 AD and travelled to India in 1192 AD. He settled in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu and spread the concept of Sufism across the country. The Dargah is visited by lakhs of devotees and tourists from all over India and the world, who come to seek the blessings of the revered saint. It is one of the most famous mosque in India which you must visit.
Architecture:
The architecture of Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti Dargah in Dindigul is of strong geometric Islamic architectural style. This shrine is a beautiful display of the Islamic architecture of 16th century. The structure of the dargah is circular and cylindrical in shape. It has a dome at the top, featuring cosmic patterns of stars and floral designs in vibrant brick colours of red, yellow and black. The windows are adorned with intricately designed calligraphic inscriptions of Islamic verses. The dargah is surrounded by four minarets on each corner, which are crowned with domes. The entrance to the dargah is guarded by two gates decorated with geometric motifs. The interior of the shrine is decorated with colorful tile patterns, displaying a fusion of Hindu and Islamic architectures of the region. The main chamber of the dargah is constructed in a dome structure and is crowned with a crescent shaped finial. The walls of the chamber are adorned with beautiful tiles depicting floral and geometric patterns, and stucco carvings. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
