Kattubava Mosque, also known as Juma Masjid, is one of the oldest mosques in Kochi (also known as Cochin), India. It was built in the 15th century by the ruler of Kochi, the Zamorin, who invited Arab traders to build trade links with Kochi. The mosque is located in the old town of Mattancherry, Kerala. It is believed that the mosque was built on the site of an earlier Hindu temple. The mosque has three domes and four minarets. It is known for its traditional Kerala architectural style, with its intricate carvings and walls. The mosque is also known for its regular Friday prayers and daily worship services. Architecture:
The Kattubava Mosque in Kochi, India dates to the 18th century and is believed to have been established by the Mappila community of the region. The mosque is constructed mainly from teak wood, and its architecture follows the traditional Kerala style. The main prayer hall is open on three sides, with four carved wooden pillars and a sloping roof made from tiled slabs or terra cotta tiles. The exterior of the mosque is covered in intricate wood carvings that depict Islamic motifs such as the crescent and star, the ayat al-kursi, and floral and geometric designs. The entrance of the mosque is flanked by two minarets with distinct architectural features. Inside the mosque, the floor is made of marble slabs, and a raised platform or mihrabiyyah is present in the center of the prayer hall which indicates the direction of prayer (qiblah). The decorative interior walls feature Islamic calligraphy in tile work. The nearby 10th century tomb of Syed Zhulfiqar Shah is believed to be associated with the mosque.
