The main feature of the temple is its magnificent sculptures. It is believed that the temple was built by the Chola kings who made a pilgrimage to this place to worship Lord Muruga, who was also known as Saravanapodam and Subramanyam. The temple was then renovated and expanded in the 18th century by the Pandyan kings, who also added a few more sculptures and murals.
