Brief History:

is a Sufi shrine located in Bidar, North Karnataka, India. It is dedicated to Muslim Sufi Saint Hazrat Makhdoom Syed Shah Zainul Abidin. The founding date of the dargah is unknown, however, it is noted that the saint resided on the premises for many years and performed various religious austerities. An annual festival is held in his memory in early December, which attracts thousands of devotees from all over India. The dargah also houses a mosque, a madrasa, and a library where the rich literature of Islamic theology, philosophy, and history is preserved. It is one of the most famous mosque in India which you must visit.

Architecture:

The Dargah of Hazrat Makhdoom Syed Shah Zainul Abidin has a unique blend of Indo-Islamic architecture which is visible in its two main structures – the Mosque and the Chowk. The walls of the structures represent three styles – the Indo-Saracenic style, the Mughal style, and the Bidri art style. The surrounding area is covered with a marble courtyard. The walls bear various inscriptions and calligraphic coverings in Arabic. The main tomb of Makhdoom Syed Shah Zainul Abidin has a dome that displays sculptures of birds and floral motifs. A small tank is located to the east of the main gate of the mosque from where pilgrims take bath before worshipping. The other structures in the dargah complex are the Chowk, which houses historical relics; the Khanqah, which is a prayer room for devotees; and the langar hall, which is a communal hall for free meals. The mosque has three entrances, two on the north-east side and one on the south-west side. The mosque also has four minarets, two in the north-east corner and two in the south-west corner. The dargah complex also houses a museum, which displays old coins, manuscripts, arms and armor, ancient paintings, and manuscripts on science and philosophy. The outer portion of the dargah complex is a garden area with trees, shrubs, and flowering plants, surrounded with a low stone wall. The mosque’s wall is decorated with colored tiles, glazed tiles, sculptures of lions, eagles, peacocks, floral motifs, and ornate reliefs. The central chamber of the mosque is a large courtyard courtyard encircled with an octagonal platform. There is also a silver railing along the mosque’s walls. The entrance to the inner compound of the mosque is framed by a decorated arched doorway. Inside, a paved courtyard is surrounded by a colonnade with domes. The mosque is also home to a large number of tombs, many of which are engraved with Quranic inscriptions. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
