Megalithic Cists and Cairns, also known as Settupattu, are ancient stone structures located in Tamil Nadu, India. Archaeologists have dated these constructions to the 1st century BC. They are made up of numerous large stones that form an enclosure that encircles a central chamber. These cists and cairns were used as storage spaces to keep valuables and sacred relics. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The most distinguishing feature of a Settupattu (megalithic cists and cairns) is the presence of a central chamber, which is constructed using massive evenly-spaced stones. These stones are generally granite and are fitted tightly together in a circular pattern around the chamber.
