Anglo Sikh War Memorial Mudki In India: History,Facts, & Services

is an enduring reminder of the battle fought between the British and the Sikh Empire at Mudki in the Punjab in 1845. It is located at the entrance of the village of Kotla Gazipur in District Fazilka, Punjab. The memorial was constructed by the British in memory of the approximately 2000 brave soldiers who lost their lives in the Anglo-Sikh War. It is considered to be one of the first memorials built in India to commemorate a battle fought in India. The memorial is a raised platform made of stone, measuring 12 feet in length and 6 feet in breadth. It features a central stone, which is inscribed with the words ‘This Stone is inscribed to record the gallant deeds of the Sikh and British Soldiers who fell in the Battle of Ferozeshah, 1846’. On either side of the central stone are two bell turrets. In the center of the platform is a sandstone obelisk, which is inscribed with an account of the battle. The battle of Mudki was fought between the two sides on 18th December 1845. The British forces comprised of two divisions from the Bengal Army, whilst the Sikh forces were led by Raja Tej Singh and Chattar Singh Attariwala. Despite a valiant effort by the Sikh forces, the battle ended in defeat and approximately 2000 brave soldiers were killed in the process. The memorial serves as a reminder of the brave soldiers who showed indomitable courage and valour in the face of the enemy. The memorial also serves as an important reminder of the Anglo-Sikh Wars and the courage and sacrifice of the Sikh and British soldiers who gave their lives. The memorial stands proudly at the entrance of Mudki village and is a lasting reminder of a brave episode in the history of India and Punjab.
