Brief History:
Karzakan Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in Bahrain and is considered to be one of the most beautiful mosques in the country. It is located in the town of Karzakan in the northern region of Bahrain. The mosque was built in the 16th century and was renovated in the 19th century. It is built in the style of traditional Bahraini architecture. The mosque is constructed of coral stone and has five entrances. Inside, the prayer hall is lined with carpets and adorned with chandeliers. Karzakan Mosque is still used for daily prayers and also hosts special prayer ceremonies. Architecture:
The Karzakan Mosque in Bahrain is an example of the traditional Islamic architecture of the country. The mosque was built in the year 1650 and has an internal prayer-hall made from coral stone and lime plaster. The main entrance of the mosque is decorated with arches while the four cornets of the walls are topped by intricate domes. The central feature of the mosque is the open courtyard, which is surrounded by a colonnade of five iwans (or vaulted open arches) on each side. This openness allows air to flow freely through the mosque, giving it a sense of coolness in the hot climate of Bahrain. On the interior of the mosque, the walls are decorated with colorful tiles. The roof of the mosque is highly decorated with colorful patterns on the ceilings and domes. The main prayer-hall is adorned with a facede of coral stones and lime plaster, reflecting traditional Islamic artistry. As for the minaret, it is composed of three stories which can be accessed by stairs from the courtyard. One of the most significant features of the Karzakan Mosque is its tranquil atmosphere. The Karzakan Mosque is located in Karzakan, Bahrain. It is approximately 37km from the capital city of Manama and 18km from the Riffa-Muharraq highway. To reach the mosque, visitors can take a taxi from the Manama bus station or use a local bus line (bus number 141). The mosque is open to visitors 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There is no entrance fee for non-Muslims. The Karzakan Mosque is an impressive building which is designed in the typical Shiekh architecture, including lime stone and mirror work. The mosque has two majestic minarets and is built on a large area, containing a main prayer hall, a courtyard, a mihrab (prayer niche) and several small classrooms. Inside the mosque, visitors can admire the intricate Mugheeh tile-work, which covers most of the walls and ceilings.
