Brief History:

The Sheikh Isa Bin Ali Al-Khalifa Mosque is an iconic religious shrine located in the heart of Manama, Bahrain, and is one of the country’s most iconic symbols. It was built in 1602 and is a prominent landmark that is easily recognized from a distance, and is highly visible for its large white dome soaring above the cityscape. The mosque is built around a four-iwan plan, which is comprised of four large halls that are divided by two tall archways. The central iwan is the largest of the four, and it contains the prayer hall, which is located on the southern side. The main prayer hall has a large mihrab and minbar for the prayers, and is covered by a large white onyx glass dome, which is visible from many of the surrounding streets. The other three iwans are smaller, but are used for special occasions such as weddings and celebrations. The arches are decorated with intricate tilework, and the prayer hall is adorned with carved marble screens. The Sheikh Isa Bin Ali Al-Khalifa Mosque is open to visitors every day from 9:00am to 1:00pm, and from 2:00pm to 4:30pm. During this time, non-Muslims are asked to dress conservatively, remove their shoes, and cover their heads while inside the mosque.
