The Barbar Mosque is dated back to the 8th century and is believed to be built during the rule of Amir ’Umar ibn Hafs, the son of King of Bahrain, Suwari bin Yusuf. It is believed to be the first official mosque built in Bahrain. Barbar Mosque has the distinction of being the first mosque with two minarets attached to it. One of the minarets was destroyed during World War I, but it was rebuilt in 1971 by the Islamic Affairs Minister of Bahrain. The mosque is known for its unique design with its two domes and its orange colored walls. Barbar Mosque is a flamboyant and well-maintained mosque that has become one of the most visited sites in Bahrain. The mosque also serves as a tourist attraction and houses the manuscript of Sayyid Hasan al-Barbar, a great scholar of Islamic literature. It is believed that this manuscript was donated to the mosque as gift from King ‘Abdullah bin Ashraf who had received it as part of his inheritance. The portico of the mosque features the great southern iwans (vaulted alcoves) that form the entrance of the mosque. Inside the mosque is a large domed prayer hall with an intricate design and a large mihrab - an niche in the wall used to indicate the qibla (direction of Mecca). The mosque also contains an undeveloped cistern, which forms part of an original water system. The walls of the Barbar Mosque are decorated with intricate calligraphy in the classic Islamic ornamentation. This is an example of the intricate craftsmanship of Islamic architecture and artistry.
