Brief History:

Hamala Mosque in Bahrain is a small but pleasant place of worship for Muslims in the country. The mosque was built in 1882 and it is located on the outskirts of Hamala Town in the Northern Governorate of Bahrain. The mosque is also known by the locals as ‘Masjid Hamala’, which is the Arabic word for ‘The Mosque of Hamala’. The mosque was built by one of the local sheikhs of the area to provide a place of worship for the locals and also to serve as a religious center for the people of the area. The architecture of the mosque is a combination of both modern and traditional Islamic styles. The mosque's interior is decorated with intricate carvings, intricate domes and vibrant colors. There are two minarets at the entrance of the mosque that stand high above the rest of the building, giving the mosque a unique and majestic look. Architecture:

Hamala Mosque is an iconic landmark in the Doiran region of Bahrain and is one of the oldest surviving examples of Bahraini architecture. This mosque was built during the 11th century and features a typical Islamic design with a mix of both Arabic and Persian styles. At its core, the mosque is organized around a central courtyard with a prayer hall that is surrounded by a row of classrooms and at the corners, four iwans. The mosque is made of typical Bahraini coral limestone and boasts an intricate façade featuring intricate carved arabesque designs, crenellations, and geometric patterns. The main entrance to the mosque is located at the eastern iwan and is made up of a pair of twin doors in a typical Islamic arching shape. The north entrance is an imitation of an iwan, supplied with a wooden door. The corner towers of the mosque are adorned with four domes – each with their own specific purpose. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.

Visiting Hours:

The Hamala Mosque is open from Fajr (dawn) to Isha (night) for both males and females. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, all visitors must wear a face mask, respect limited visitor numbers, and observe physical distancing. Prayers in the mosque are conducted in accordance with the Bahraini Ministry of Health and Ministry of Islamic Affairs guidelines.
