The Al-Hajjaj Mosque was constructed by the Umayyad ruler Al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf in Bahrain in the 8th century CE. The mosque is built on a sandstone foundation with sandstone walls and pillars. It has a rectangular shape with a large mihrab (prayer niche) which is situated at the center of the qibla wall (the wall facing Mecca). The mosque is flanked by two smaller mihrabs located at the side walls, and It also had a pulpit near the mihrab. The mosque was decorated with intricate stucco work and architectural ornamentation on the walls. The interior of the mosque also includes a prayer area with brick flooring and a series of arches.
