History:
The Sitra Causeway is a causeway connecting Bahrain’s capital city, Manama, and the nearby Sitra Island. The causeway was constructed in 1975 with the aim of alleviating traffic problems and to make access to the island easier. The construction of the causeway was begun in the late 1960s and was completed in 1975. It has provided a crucial link between Bahrain’s mainland and Sitra Island, which at that time still had a large population of approximately 15,000 inhabitants. The construction of Sitra Causeway was part of a larger development project which socially and economically developed both Manama and Sitra Island. By forming the physical link between Manama and Sitra, the causeway allowed for greater social and economic integration between the two localities. Today Sitra Causeway is one of the major transportation arteries in Bahrain, connecting Manama with other important localities such as Muharraq, Duraz and the industrial port of Hidd. The causeway is also a key component of Bahrain's national highway, Highway 18, and has been widened multiple times to accommodate increased levels of traffic. The causeway and its bridge have loomed large in the local cultural landscape, and even feature on the Bahraini 10 dinar currency note. The causeway stands as an iconic reminder of the close ties between Manama and Sitra Island, and a symbol of the development of Bahrain’s infrastructure in the post-independence era.
