History:

Construction of the King Fahd Causeway began in 1981, with the aid of Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, and the causeway officially opened in 1986. The causeway was built in an effort to strengthen diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Bahrain and to improve commerce between the two countries. It stretches for 17 miles (27 km) and traverses the Persian Gulf, connecting the cities of Manama in Bahrain and Al Khubar in Saudi Arabia. The causeway is lined with concrete blocks and features a navigation channel running down the center. In 2000, the King Fahd Causeway Authority (KFCA) was set up in Bahrain by the governments of Bahrain and Saudi Arabia to oversee the operation and maintenance of the causeway. The KFCA improved the causeway by upgrading the road surface and expanding its capacity. In 2008, the KFCA opened a new bridge, the King Fahd Causeway Silver Jubilee Bridge, which connects Bahrain to Saudi Arabia by traversing a part of the original causeway. This bridge improves the capacity of the Causeway by twofold. In 2019, the KFCA signed a Memorandum of Understanding with established companies to continue modernizing the causeway. This includes implementing a state-of-the-art vehicle monitoring system and expansion works. The works are expected to be completed by 2023. The King Fahd Causeway is a symbol of friendship and cooperation between Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, and serves to facilitate trade, transportation, and tourism between the two countries.
