Brief History:
Awali Mosque is an important landmark in Bahrain, located in the town of Awali in the north of the country. The current structure dates back to the 14th century, with previous structures having existed there since the 10th century. The mosque is heavily associated with Shia Islam, and even today remains the largest Shia mosque in the country. The Awali Mosque has a long and important history in Bahrain, with it being a prominent site of worship for centuries. It is believed that the first prayer was held at the mosque in 953 CE. The Attiyat Allah (أتهية الله), a series of verses from the holy Quran, were said to have been blown by wind from the heavens directly onto the dome, marking the spot as a holy place. The Islamic sect of the time, The Ismailiyah would often use the mosque as a place of worship during the 10th century. Throughout the years, the mosque has been used and expanded upon by many prominent figures and rulers, including Ubaidullah al-Mahdi, the founder of the Bahraini state in 790 CE, and ruler Muhammad bin Qasim Al-Mahdy during the 12th century. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the mosque underwent renovations and expansions from rulers of the region such as the Banu Mula and the Banu Quda’as. The Bahraini government in the 21st century has continued to expand and update the Awali Mosque, utilizing modern techniques and aesthetics to restore the building to its former glory. Today, the Awali Mosque serves as a place for Shia Muslim prayer and worship as well as a popular tourist attraction. Architecture:
The Awali Mosque in Bahrain is a historic Shi'ite mosque located in the capital city of Manama. The mosque was built in 1918 and is one of the oldest mosques in the country. The mosque is constructed out of white coral stone and its architecture is inspired by the traditional Bahraini style, with a large central dome and four smaller domes located at the corners of the main structure. The mosque also features two minarets, with a covered porch that serves as the main entrance into the mosque. Inside the mosque, the spiritual space is split into a large central hall with a mihrab which is where the Imam stands to lead prayers and a prayer hall. The mosque is beautifully decorated with intricate marble and stone work, and colorful paintings and decorations throughout. Visiting Hours:
TheAwali Mosque in Bahrain is open to the public seven days a week from 7.30 am to 12.00 pm in the morning prayer time, and 4.00 pm to 6.00 pm in the afternoon prayer time.
