The Salzburg Museum Carolino Augusteum, or officially “Museum Carolino Augusteum Salzburg" is an history museum in Salzburg, Austria with fascinating collections of artworks, cultural artifacts and documents from the Roman Empire era up to modern times. The museum dates back to 1728, when Prince-Archbishop Franz Anton von Harrach gave permission to store objects in the Residenz, the palace of the Prince-Archbishops. The museum was then opened to the public and was the first museum in Austria. During the 18th century, the museum’s collections grew as an impressive range of historical artifacts, antiquities, coins and rare books were obtained. The museum’s collection continued to grow over the centuries and today it is home to a wide range of objects, from archaeological finds to ethnographic artefacts and works of art from the Middle Ages to the present day. In 1843, the museum was renamed “Carolino Augusteum” in honour of the first Grand Duke of Salzburg, Prince-Archbishop Maximilian Joseph Maria Augustinus, who was often referred to as "Carolino August".
