Pilgrimage Church Maria Schnee (Maria Luggau) is a historically significant Roman Catholic church dedicated to Mary, located in the village of Maria Luggau in the Lienz district of East Tyrol in Austria. Built in the late 16th century, its elaborate baroque interior is considered one of the finest examples of provincial churches in Austria. Throughout its history, it has been a popular destination for pilgrims who seek the intercession of Mary. Every year in September the faithful gather to celebrate a pilgrimage in honor of its patroness. The church’s main features include frescoes and an intricately carved marble main altar. It is made from multiple elements and includes a crucifix, a statue of St. Francis and a figure of the Virgin Mary. Other noteworthy features include the pulpit and the window openings which depict scenes from the life of Mary. In addition, the church houses the Relic of the Holy Coat, a piece of cloth believed to have been worn by Jesus around his shoulders during his crucifixion, which has been awarded a special designation by the Pope. This relic is displayed in a special chapel located at the entrance to the church. Maria Schnee also provides a variety of religious services such as Sunday Mass, baptisms and weddings.
