History:
The Neue Burg (New Castle) was a large building complex located in Vienna, Austria at the northern end of the Hofburg section of the Imperial Palace. It was constructed during the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria and was intended to expand the residential and administrative areas of the Imperial Palace. Construction started in 1881 and was completed in 1913. The Neue Burg was the last and largest of the Hofburg buildings. The Neue Burg was designed in the neo-Renaissance style by architects Gottfried Semper and Karl von Hasenauer. The south and east façades of the building, facing the courtyards of the Hofburg, were decorated with numerous sculptures and reliefs symbolizing the imperial spirit. The center of the complex contained a number of grand ceremonial chambers, including a great hall, which was used for receptions, balls, and state banquets. The Imperial Family lived in the Neue Burg until 1918, when the monarchy ended. The Neue Burg was the home of many famous people, including Austrian statesman and dramatist Franz Grillparzer, Franz Schubert, and Archduke Franz Ferdinand, whose assassination in Sarajevo in 1914 triggered World War I. The building was severely damaged during World War II and was ultimately mostly demolished in the 1950s and 1960s to make way for construction on the University of Vienna and the Vienna State Opera buildings. The ruins of the Neue Burg still stand today, although they are mostly obscured by the surrounding buildings. Visit one of the famous monuments of Austria with your friends and family.
