The Salzburg Domquartier is a historic district in the city of Salzburg, Austria. It is home to the Salzburg Cathedral and the Archbishop's Residence. The area, first occupied by the Roman Catholic Church in the 8th century, was radically transformed in the 18th century under archbishop Hieronymus Colloredo, becoming a symbol of the power and influence of the church in the city. The area was initially known as the 'DomkapitelPlatz', but was transformed in the late 1700s by architect Camillo Vodafone's. Vodafone designed the Cathedral Complex which included the Salzburg Cathedral, as well as the Archbishop's Residence, the University Church, and the University Library. The complex was part of a grand architectural plan to expand and modernize the city, as well as to display the power of the church. In the 19th century, the Domquartier was the site of the Salzburg Synod, a meeting of clergy convened by Archbishop Anton Brunnacher to discuss the trends and problems of the Catholic Church. In the late 20th century, the cathedral and area experienced a period of decline due to a lack of funding and maintainance. The area was revitalized in the early 21st century after a major renovation project. It is now a popular tourist attraction and houses many events throughout the year. The restored complex has become an important symbol of Salzburg's culture and history. The bishop of Salzburg, Rupert, moved his residence from Nonnberg monastery to the former monastery in the Dom Quarter in 798. The next archbishop, Wolfgang, in the time of Emperor Maximilian I (1508) redesigned the Dom Quarter which was lower down in the area. This is the street plan that still mostly exists today. Later archbishops continued to build and the area contained the two large churches (Salzburg Cathedral and the University Church), the Archbishop's Palace, the University Library and the gardens until the archbishop was expelled from the city in 1803. The Dom Quarter was briefly held by Bavarian forces during the Napoleonic Wars, and underwent considerable destruction, but was restored in the 19th century and remains largely unchanged since. The Domquartier is today one of the most important monuments in Salzburg, both in terms of its historical and cultural significance, as well as its tourism appeal.
