The Salzburg Kapuzinerberg is a hill and park in the city of Salzburg, Austria. Located just to the north of the historic core of the city, it offers panoramic views of the city and its surrounding mountains. It is known for its many trails, gardens, cafés, and churches. It was also the late-Kapuzinerkirche, a monastery of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin from 1612 until their expulsion in 1782–after which it passed into the ownership of the city of Salzburg. The Kapuzinerberg has a long history of religious significance. It was a pilgrimage site for centuries, and was considered to be sacred ground by Salzburg’s citizens. During the time of the Friars Minor Capuchin, the monastery was a center for spiritual and intellectual development–producing scholars, scientists, and theologians who went on to shape the city and region’s religious and intellectual life. The hill has also had a long connection with music, and with Austria’s most famous composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In the late-18th century, Prince-Archbishop Hieronymus Colloredo ordered the building of a summer palace–complete with an opera stage–on the hill.
