History:
The Fortress Hohensalzburg is located in the city of Salzburg in Austria. Built in 1077, the fortress towers over the city of Salzburg and is one of the most iconic landmarks of the city. The original fortress, known as the Hohenwerfen, was constructed by Prince Archbishop Gebhard in 1077. Built on a hill overlooking the city, the fort was designed to protect the city from invasions and provide a safe haven for the archbishop and his court. In the 13th century, the fortress was expanded by Archbishop Eberhard II who reinforced the walls and added a series of towers. In 1495, the fortress was again renovated by Archbishop Leonhard II, who built the Burgattery and remodelled parts of the fort. The fortress complex was further expanded in 1519, when Bishop Leonhard II added a new wing to the existing complexes. In 1567, a new defensive wall was added, which encircled the complex. In the 17th century, the fortress was reinforced further and in 1681, Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria had additional fortifications added. The fortress was used for numerous important purposes throughout this time, including as a prison and a military base during the Wars of Austrian Succession. In the 19th century, Hohensalzburg was used as a state prison and a garrison. In 1895, the fort was restored and opened to the public, becoming one of Salzburg’s most popular attractions.
