History:

Salzburg Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Salzburg, Austria. Built in 774, it is dedicated to the Saint Rupert, the patron saint of Salzburg and is considered to be one of the most prominent churches in the country. The earliest known history of the Salzburg Cathedral dates back to 774 when Archbishop Arno of Salzburg began to construct the original church. Over the following centuries, however, the building was constantly modified and renovated, including a major building project led by Archbishop Berthold of Henneberg in 1283 which significantly changed the form of the church into the shape it is today. In 1732, the Cathedral was almost completely destroyed by a fire caused by faulty flues. After the fire, the church was rebuilt and restored to its former glory, with the additions of new carvings and statues. In 1958, the 700th anniversary of the Cathedral was celebrated, and in celebration, four bells were added to the tower, three of which were cast by Hans Drexel. Today, Salzburg Cathedral remains a place of worship and the centerpiece of Salzburg’s cultural heritage. Additionally, it serves as the burial site of many of Salzburg’s archbishops and is a popular tourist attraction.
