Schloss Klessheim in Salzburg, Austria, is a grand baroque style palace located in the south-eastern suburbs of the city. It is the site of several important historic events, including the celebration of the marriage of Archduke Franz-Ferdinand and Duchess Sophie von Hohenberg in 1903. The construction of the palace began in 1701 under the direction of the Prince Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Salzburg, Count Johann Ernst Thun, and it completed in 1706. The palace was designed by the Italian architect Domenico Egidio Rossi and the construction process was supervised by Franz Xaver Holzmöller, under the orders of the Prince Archbishop and with the help of many local artisans. The exterior of the palace was dominated by its large Rococo garden. Included in this garden was an oval pond for bathing, a marble fountain, a fragrant rose garden, and a more wide variety of shrubs, vegetables, and herbs. The palace was later used by many different rulers over the centuries. During the Napoleonic Wars, the palace was taken over as Napoleon's headquarters. It was used by the Bavarian and Imperial forces when they occupied Salzburg in later conflicts. During the 19th century, Schloss Klessheim was also used as a meeting place for members of the aristocracy and, in particular, was the venue for the marriage celebration of Archduke Franz-Ferdinand in 1903. After the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806, the palace was used as a summer residence by various members of the Imperial family and, for a time, as the home of the Archbishop of Salzburg. In the 1920s, as the wealthy classes flocked to Salzburg, Schloss Klessheim was chosen as the venue for a number of prestigious events. In later years, Schloss Klessheim was gradually restored and renovated. The palace was reopened to the public in 1995 and is now a popular tourist attraction.
