History:

Hellbrunn Palace is a historic country estate located in Salzburg, Austria. The palace was constructed in 1615 by Salzburg's prince-archbishop Marcus Sitticus von Hohenems Altemps. The palace was designed to be an extravagant summer retreat to entertain guests with its attractions. It is located on the southern outskirts of modern-day Salzburg, in the Leopoldskron-Moos district. The palace is most famous for the “Water Follies” during the seventeenth century, which were tricks and pranks played on guests using the waterworks. The palace grounds include numerous trick fountains, with statues, hidden water guns, and other fun surprises. Many of these waterworks are still functioning today. Other attractions of the palace include the unique Zoo with deer, mouflon, wild boar, cranes, and more; an Orangery; an open-air theater; and the open-air banqueting pavilion, the Grottensaal, covered with frescoes of ancient Roman mythology. The palace remained the property of the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg until 1803, when it was swindled from the princely house by his son-in-law Hofrat von Kurz. In 1808 the building became the official residence of the Archbishop, until finally becoming the official residence of the Hohenems Altemps family, who held the estate until 1919. It was purchased by the city of Salzburg in 1924 and over the next decade it was turned into a museum. It remains open for the public to visit today.
