History:

The Mozarteum was founded in Salzburg, Austria, in 1880 by Guido Adler, renowned Vienna-based musicologist and Mozart scholar. This specialized music school rapidly earned an international reputation and was modelled after the Vienna Conservatory, the Leipzig Conservatory, and the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland. The Mozarteum acquired a permanent home in 1897 in a beautiful 18th century Baroque palace in Salzburg's historic old town. Max Reinhardt and Hugo von Hofmannsthal served as artistic advisors for the first edition of the Salzburg Festival in 1920—a summer celebration of classical music. During the Second World War, all collections, books and manuscripts belonging to the Mozarteum were moved to a safe place and stored in the State Library of Vienna. After the war ended, much of the library’s materials were returned and the Mozarteum started to focus more on documentating the work of Mozart and spread the appreciation of Austrian music. In 1953, it gained the status of a university and several prominent professors began to lecture at the school. In 1965, the Mozarteum reached an agreement with the state of Austria to become part of the University of Salzburg, with the Mozarteum being the Faculty of Music for the university. The university is now known as the University Mozarteum Salzburg and offers numerous courses and degrees in music and theater. The Mozarteum continues to now focus on the performance and study of music, including those of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and seeks to spread the appreciation of Austrian music. The Mozarteum is a member of the Association of European Conservatories and several international organizations, which encourages and promotes interaction between conservatories worldwide. It also has more than 65 research partners from all over the world. The Mozarteum has become one of the biggest contributors to the world of music education and has earned an international reputation over the past 140 years.
