The Salzburg Mozart Wohnhaus first opened its doors in 1880, as a private home and temporary home to the family of one of the most renowned composers of all time, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. During this time, Salzburg was still under Austrian rule and the city was a bustling hub of culture and music. The home was originally built by Mozart’s father, Leopold Mozart, as a residence for Mozart and his family from 1747-1777. It is thought that Mozart composed some of his most famous musical works here, including ‘A Little Night Music’ and ‘The Magic Flute’. The Mozart family left Salzburg for Vienna in 1777 and the building was transformed into a messenger station for the post office. In 1880, after years of neglect, it was restored to its former glory and opened as the Salzburg Mozart Wohnhaus.
