Innsbruck Cathedral or the Cathedral of St. James (Dom zu St. Jakob) is one of the most important cultural landmarks in the city of Innsbruck in Austria and is dedicated to St. James the Great. The cathedral is a Benedictine church, meaning it is a church that belongs to the Order of Saint Benedict, and is based on the Rule of Saint Benedict, the teachings of the 8th century monastic reform movement. The history of the Innsbruck Cathedral dates back to 1180 when the first church was built as a parish church. Soon after, it was elevated to the status of Cathedral and work on the current building began in the late 1200s. In 1315, the first spire was erected and in 1363 the new church was consecrated as a cathedral. During the following centuries the cathedral slowly gained its present appearance: the current nave was built from 1500-1713 and several chapels and the central tower were added around the church from 1675-1724.
