Heiligenkreuz Kirche In Austria: History,Facts, & Services
History:
The church was built in around 1192–1202 and was named for then-bishop Eberhard of Passau, who donated the land for its construction. The church underwent several modifications throughout its history, with Gothic and Baroque features being added during the 15th and 17th centuries. In the 19th century, a series of renovations and restorations were carried out to restore the church to its original 12th-century state. The current structure of the building, with its Gothic vaults and eave-height walls, is largely a product of the restorations. Heiligenkreuz Kirche is the only church in Lower Austria that dates back to the Romanesque period. The church's interior is especially noteworthy for its frescoes and altarpieces, which depict scenes from the life of Jesus Christ and the saints. Services:
Heiligenkreuz Kirche offers regular Mass services for visitors and locals alike. Mass times are Monday and Wednesday at 6pm, Saturday at 5pm, and Sunday at 11am. Confessions are Saturday at 4pm.
