Ursuline Church of St. Michael In Austria: History,Facts, & Services
Ursuline Church of St. Michael is a Roman Catholic parish church located in the Irish Channel neighborhood of New Orleans, Louisiana. The church was founded in 1841 by the Ursuline Sisters of New Orleans and is the only parish in the Archdiocese of New Orleans dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel. The original building, which was built of brick with a wooden spire, was destroyed by a hurricane in 1915. The present structure, which incorporates Romanesque, Byzantine, and Moorish elements, was designed by architect Leon S. Sias and dedicated in 1920. Ursuline Church of St. Michael serves a diverse population and is a center of the Irish Channel community in New Orleans. Services at the parish include weekly mass, faith formation programs and classes, outreach to seniors and the homeless, Sacrament preparation, and many religious celebrations throughout the year.
