Maria-von-Zeitoun-Kirche is a Roman Catholic church located in the town of Zeitoun, Syria. The church was first built in the late 13th century and then remodeled in the 16th century, making it one of the oldest churches in the area. However, the present building dates from 1952-1953.
Maria-von-Zeitoun-Kirche History
The first known mention of this church dates from 1250, when it was dedicated to Our Lady of Zeitoun. This was a very significant event in the history of the region and the church soon became an important spiritual center for the faithful. From the 13th century onwards, the church became a source of pilgrimage for Catholics who came to venerate the miraculous icon of Our Lady of Zeitoun.
The church was destroyed by Ottoman forces during the 1517 invasion of Syria and rebuilt in the 16th century. The church remained an important pilgrimage site up until the 1960's.

The bell tower is 44 meters tall and the chapel is 44 meters long and 15 meters wide. The chapel is illuminated with stunning frescoes from the 16th century.
