History:

The Linzergasse is an old trading street in Salzburg, Austria with a long and interesting history. It began in 1250 as a straight thoroughfare linking the market of St. Peter’s Square with the moated castle known to locals as Guldenhaus. The street was originally called “Lindzertor”, or “Lintz gate,” and was named after the small toll gate located between the market and the castle. In the 15th century, the street was renamed “Linzergasse” and was a major trading route connecting Salzburg with the city of Linz. It featured a row of stores on either side of the street that sold imported merchandise and fabrics from around Europe. In 1854, the city of Salzburg began to tear down the old Linzergasse and build a modern street in its place. This new street featured cobblestone roads and wider pavements. The buildings that lined the new street blended well with the surrounding Baroque architecture, and the major attractions in the area, such as the Franziskanerkirche (St.Francis Church) and the Domquartier, can still be seen today. Throughout much of the 20th century, the street remained as a popular trading route in Salzburg, although its use for imports and exports had begun to decline due to changes in technology and transportation.
