History:

Schloss Leopoldskron, located in Salzburg, Austria, is a Baroque palace that dates back to the 18th century. Built by Archbishop Firmian of Salzburg, the palace was named after Prince Leopold von Firmian, his predecessor in the archbishopric. It served as a summer residence for the archbishops until 1786. In 1938, the palace was acquired by the Jewish-American businessman, Max Reinhardt. Reinhardt renovated and expanded the palace, turning it into the center of his “Theatre of the World” project, hosting international theatre and music festivals. After WW II, Schloss Leopoldskron became part of the Salzburg Folklore Institute, founded by the city‘s mayor. The institute held conferences on folklore, history, arts and literature until 1975. Since the mid-1980s, the palace has been owned by the “Forum Culture and Education” foundation (FKuK). The foundation uses the palace as a center of European culture, putting on conferences and symposia involving global issues and international cooperation. In 1985, the palace was declared a protected historic monument. Today, the palace is popularly known as the filming location for the 1965 movie The Sound of Music. The palace was chosen to represent the Von Trapp family’s home as well as other exterior sequences of the movie. It has since become a major tourist attraction in the region.
