History:

The area of Salzburg-Mondsee lies in the Salzburg province of Austria, just east of the city of Salzburg. In prehistory, the region was part of the Roman Empire. Later, the area came under the rule of the Bavarian dynasty and in 1254, it became part of Austria. It was during the 17th century that the city of Mondsee was first established and it underwent a period of development over the course of the following centuries. The area around Mondsee became dominated by the ancient Salzburg Cathedral from 1722. The Cathedral has origins to the 8th century and represents the major religious attraction in the area. The region was also the setting of the 1965 musical, "The Sound of Music", which was filmed mostly in the mountains surrounding Mondsee and Salzburg. As a result, the city saw a wave of tourism in the following decades, as fans of the musical flocked to the area to experience the filming locations in person.
