Karlsplatz is a large public square in Vienna, Austria. Located in the center of the city, the square was formerly known as the Friedhof der Namenlosen and is adjacent to the Ringstrasse. It is surrounded on all sides by buildings and monuments, including the Karlskirche and the Secession Building. The history of Karlsplatz dates back to the early 19th century when Austrian Emperor Franz I had the land cleared for a grand parade square. The square was first named in honor of Emperor Francis I and later, in 1820, it was renamed Karlsplatz in honor of his son, Emperor Karl I. The original layout of the square was the work of Ludwig Förster and it featured a large circular pool in the center, surrounded by paths and trees. An equestrian statue of Karl I was erected in the center of the square in 1825. In the subsequent years, the square was transformed into a busy marketplace and cultural center, hosting frequent concerts and operas.
