Mariazell Basilica In Austria: History,Facts, & Services
History:
The origins of Mariazell Basilica date back to the year 1157 when a monk named by the name of Magnus founded a church at this site, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. In 1171, Magnus was succeeded by a Benedictine monk, named Henry of Consteng, who was the first person to construct a chapel near the church. In 1181 the chapel was named a pilgrimage church called Mariazeller Pforte or Mariazell's Gate. It was enhanced over the years, including the building of a large monastic complex with cloisters and other buildings. Mariazell Basilica This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Austria.
